MACHALILLA NATIONAL PARK

This is the largest dry tropical rainforest in Ecuador and it was created in 1979 to protect two offshore islands, the only coral formation on the Ecuadorian mainland coast, parts of tropical rain forest and cloudforest as well. The Park encompasses interesting Pre-Columbian archeological ruins and artifacts, beaches and tropical dry forest with bottled shaped trees stretching along the pacific coast. Well over 200 species have been identified including coastal parrots, seabirds, deer's, guantas, iguanas, snakes and anteaters. A popular tourist destination, is "Isla de la Plata" situated 40 km northwest of Puerto López. It is surrounded by species like the red and blue footed boobies, pelicans, gulls and sea lions. No wonder its beeen called "The Little Galapagos" due its similarity with The Galapagos Islands. Dolphins and whales have been sighted between the months of June and October, making snorkeling a common activity.
